Andirons were used for centuries to support the logs on the hearths of fireplaces. Early andirons had crossbars, which were probably used as a footrest to warm the feet of the welcome hearth visitor from the cold winter. Some andirons had receptacles at the top to place bowls used to warm food.  

An American word, Andiron is a derivative of the Old French word andier, meaning iron. In England they are known as firedogs.
